Unified Platform for Nextgen IP Telecom Services

In the past there separate networks were created to handle different categories of data and a different I/O device for each type of data.. Today like single devices provide multifunctions (e.g. wireless phone acts as a camera, transmits video, transfers data, handles paging, and acts as your local home or office phone) similarly a single converged network is being designed to handle multiple types of data, so the carriers can greatly reduce their cost of owning and operating many different types of networks. IMS is a part of the Quad-play (Voice, Data, Video, Mobility) architecture of this converged Carriers today are already competing in providing Wired & Wireless Voice, Internet DSL and Cable Video. UIt is this competition that is accelerating the movement to IMS services.

Why IP based Multimedia Systems ?

IMS objective is threefold:
- To support the new multimedia services; multimedia means voice, video, data (IM, applications, sharing, etc.)intertwined>drive revenue up
- To simplify the network; one single data switched network will in the end (2008-2012) support all services> drive CapEx and OpEx down
- To enable fixed-mobile convergence; one single data backbone, session control and service plane, several access(WCDMA,WIFI/WIMAX, ADSL, FTTH, etc.) networks IMS is composed of three main planes
- Transport plane: moves the bits back and forth and interconnects them to the legacy ; runs on an IP network
- Control Plane: Control the session state, the subscription and service information and the selection/state of the gateways involved in the sessions
- Services Plane: Where the application logic resides, composed of a service enabling plane(orchestration, charging, OSA, etc.) and the applications

The next generation unified networks serving the enterprise and telecom applications can support a host of emerging IP Telecom services using a common services delivery platform: IMS Services Web Services Streaming Services Messaging Services As shown in the above diagram, yet be able to connect to existing Circuit Switched analog telephony of yester years.
